When Laurel was about 7 or 8 months old, I started putting a burp cloth in the crib with her in hopes that it would become a "lovey" to her. Laurel sleeps with a little stuffed horse and a little stuffed baby doll as well, but it seems like she has gotten herself attached to the burp cloth. I was hoping for this because a) we have several of them, so there is always one on hand and b) they're washable. It's also been really helpful if she's sleeping in the pack-n-play or another crib when we're out of town because I feel like it's a signal to her that it's time to go to sleep.
We knew it was part of Laurel's napping and bedtime routine, but we're starting to realize how important it is to Laurel. When Laurel gets put in her crib for the night or for a nap, she'll immediately lay down and bury her face in the burp cloth. A few days ago, Peter didn't put one in there because he thought there was one still in the crib and he said that Laurel just sat up and looked around like, "Hey where's my burp cloth?"
(If you look closely in the picture, there is also a diaper. When Laurel's playing around in her crib, she'll pull diapers from her changing table.)
Typically, Laurel just has the burp cloth at naps and at night time, but often she'll pull it out of the crib and carry it around with her or chew on it.
When I'm putting away her laundry, Laurel thinks she has hit the jackpot. She loves finding the fresh burp cloths in the laundry basket and makes sure to love on (aka chew on) most, if not all, of them. I end up with a pile of slightly damp burp cloths.
